Stefan HOLBAN awarded Professor Emeritus

Dr. ing. Ștefan HOLBAN has been awarded Professor Emeritus by the Politehnica University of Timisoara, as per the Decision of the Senate of the UPT, no. 48/ 17.02.2022,

for the remarkable didactic, scientific and management results, as well as his significant contributions to the development of the Department of Computer and Information Technology and of the Politehnica University of Timisoara, throughout his professional activity, since 1975.

Professor Dr. Eng. Ștefan Holban (b. 1947) is conducting for over 45 years a remarkable academic and scientific activity at the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Department of Computer and Information Technology, as one of the contributing members of the first department and the first university-level study program in Computing in Romania, which were launched in our University. He also coordinated, in a skillful and collegial manner, the development of the Faculty of Automation and Computing as its Dean, from 1993 until 2003.

Along his academic career he published over 130 scientific papers in prestigious journals and volumes of conferences, at international and national level, 10 books and 8 academic handbooks. He was involved in over 11 research and development grants and contracts, as director/ principal investigator or team member, on high interest topics in the field of computer science and engineering. He is a PhD supervisor in Computer and Information Technology since 1994, with a total of 12 PhD Theses successfully finalized at present.

His scientific activity in the area of electronic computers and information technology has been focused towards a set of topics of high importance and interest, such as: system modeling and simulation techniques, performance evaluation of computing systems and computer networks, data mining, neural networks, artificial intelligence and machine learning, game theory and bio-inspired systems. In 1984, he has been awarded by the Romanian Academy with the "Nicolae Teclu" prize.

Throughout his over 45 years of academic activity within the UPT Department of Computer and Information Technology, professor Holban has founded and taught a significant number of new courses, such as: "Data Mining", "Performance Evaluation of Computer Systems", "Modeling and Simulation", "Artificial Intelligence".

Moreover, professor Holban is, or was, a member in a significant number of scientific and professional committees, which prove both the national and international levels of visibility and recognition of his activity:

  • Senior member, ACM (since 2009);
  • Member, IEEE (since 2002);
  • Member, ACM (1995 - 2009);
  • Member of the Academy of Romanian Scientists (since 1991);
  • Member of the Romanian Biochemistry Society;
  • Awarded by the Romanian Academy with the "Nicolae Teclu" prize, in 1984.
