Abstract: Discussing current trends in silicon technology influencing image sensor design - stacking silicon is a way to mitigate moving technology to a next silicon node while maintaining the trend of density increase in integrated circuits. Several examples of stacked image sensors will be discussed. Stacking image sensors with computational elements can be an optimized way of implementing computational imaging but a next step would be a joint optimization of the layers in this stack - this is a new approach to implement computational image elements: algorithm-hardware co-design. One implementation example of hardware-algorithm co-design is based on stacking a programmable hardware architecture with a BSI image sensor resulting in a customizable monolithic computational sensor.
